Noel Bicknell
My current watercolor artwork aims for close observation and extending flow state. I try to paint locations, often abstracted, that hold personal meaning—sites I return to repeatedly, tracing their changes across time. Themes of the isolated, ephemeral, and endangered often surface in my work. Conscious of the beholders share, I hope that the strong emotions I feel in these environments transcend the image and allow the viewer to sense what is beneath the place.
My artistic journey has moved through many mediums: from documentary and landscape photography to ceramics and ironwork, and finally to watercolor. Each discipline has shaped how I see. The textures and negative spaces of clay, the weight and grittiness of metal, and the tonality and contrasts of photography all inform the way I approach watercolor.
I currently show my work at the Centre Street Arts Gallery in Bath, Maine
